With dungeons and dragons seeming to get more and more popular every year, it’s no surprise that Wizards of the Coast continues to develop its content in new and meaningful ways. This is evident in the continuous publication of material via the Unearthed Arcana website, and the second part of the Class Variants section will be discussed below.
The Class Variants component aims to improve or replace the existing functionality in the basic player manual with new functionality available for game testing. Keep in mind that this material is not published, therefore the use of this material will depend on what the Dungeon Master allows.
All classes have access to the versatility functionality of the skill. Each time a player gains the increase in capacity score indicated by his class, he can exchange one skill for another offered by his class at the first level. Barbarian, an already powerful class in its own right, sees little new functionality beyond Survival Instincts (which replaces Danger Sense) and Instinctive Pounce (which replaces Fast Movement). Survival Instincts allow skill and expertise in two of the following skills: animal handling, medicine, nature, perception or survival.
Instinctive Pounce lets you channel the wild side of a barbarian’s rage. When a creature ends its turn within 15 feet of you, you can use your reaction to move up to half your speed to a space closer to the creature. This movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
